Start your journey at the Freddie Mercury statue on the Place du Marché in Montreux. After that, it's easy to go straight to Villeneuve.
You will first pass by the Casino de Montreux, a historic place ravaged by fire in 1971 which inspired the hit "Smoke on the Water" to the band Deep Purple. Further on, you will soon see the majestic Chillon Castle in the distance, a fortress whose foundations date back to the 12th century and which is the most visited historical monument in Switzerland.
If you continue straight on, after about fifteen minutes you will arrive at the entrance to the town of Villeneuve, symbolised by its welcoming swimming pool.
If you wish to extend the route, you can continue for just under 2 km and discover the Grangettes nature reserve, a protected paradise for birds and other animals. Signs and observation towers can be found at the start of the reserve, just outside the town of Villeneuve (road to the right, just after crossing the Eau-Froide river).
Anecdote: a few hundred metres off the quays of Villeneuve, a plane tree as gigantic as it is mysterious seems to float on the surface of the water. It is in fact the Island of Peilz, whose origins remain unclear... A woman's tribute to her missing fiancé? All sorts of legends surround this atypical island.
