Gustave Courbet in La Tour-de-Peilz
La Tour de Peilz
Major artist of the 19th century, Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) is considered one of the most important painters in the history of Western art. Originally from Ornans in Franche-Comté, Courbet quickly became an essential figure in the Parisian art world, and his unique approach to painting gave rise to a new artistic movement called "Realism". 150 years ago, forced into exile for political reasons, the painter found refuge in Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva. An outdoor path in La Tour-de-Peilz takes you to the emblematic places where the artist lived and painted. Immerse yourself in history as you explore the old town and its harbor, and discover the landscapes that inspired Courbet's views of the lake, the Chillon Castle, and the Alps.
