In Veytaux, near Montreux, Chillon Castle has stood proudly on its rocky island for nearly a thousand years. Made famous by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s novel “Julie, or the New Heloise” and Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”, this fortress is a true treasure from the past: a must-see.
"Working in a castle is kind of magical!"
Read moreCalifornian musician, composer and singer Tony Lewis spent a long time traveling around before settling on the Montreux Riviera. Having fallen in love with the region on his arrival in Switzerland in 1991, this history buff has been putting his infectious energy to good use at Chillon Castle for the past ten years.
What is your role at the Château?
I started out as a guide, then spent five years as a janitor: an exciting - and physical! - which enabled me to get to know each and every one of the stones that make up this venerable edifice. Since 2021, I've been working as a guide again.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Sharing! It's like performing on stage: even if you've already played a piece a thousand times, you still have to pass it on with the same passion and energy.
Is there an anecdote you'd like to share with us?
Um... Maybe that day when I had five groups of five different languages. I remember sleeping really well when I got home!
In addition to the Château de Chillon, Tony Lewis is also a certified guide in Lavaux and at Chaplin's World... when he's not performing on a local stage! Check out his latest music news at tonylewis.ch
